What is PCOS?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age. It is characterized by an imbalance in reproductive hormones, leading to a variety of symptoms and potential health complications.

 

Symptoms of PCOS


The most common symptoms of PCOS include:

Irregular or missed periods

Excessive hair growth on the face, chest, abdomen, or thighs

Acne

Weight gain or difficulty losing weight

Thinning hair on the scalp

Darkening of skin in certain areas

Causes of PCOS


The exact cause of PCOS is not fully understood, but several factors are believed to contribute to its development, According to Ayurveda it's considered as YONIVAYAPAD

which is causes due to Dosha imbalance & Ama ( toxins) in body. Several other causes can be :-


Excessive insulin: Many women with PCOS have insulin resistance, which leads to high insulin levels and triggers the ovaries to produce more androgens.


Low-grade inflammation: Research suggests that women with PCOS have chronic inflammation, which may stimulate the ovaries to produce excess androgens.


Heredity: PCOS tends to run in families, and women with a family history of the condition are more likely to develop it.

 

Complications of PCOS


If left untreated, PCOS can lead to several serious health complications, including:

Infertility

Type 2 diabetes

High blood pressure

Sleep apnea

Depression and anxiety

Endometrial cancer

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

To diagnose PCOS, healthcare providers typically perform a physical exam, blood tests to measure hormone levels, and a pelvic ultrasound to check for polycystic ovaries.

Treatment for PCOS focuses on managing symptoms and reducing the risk of complications. Common treatments include:

Lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet and regular exercise

Medications to regulate menstrual cycles, reduce androgen levels, and improve insulin sensitivity

Treatment for specific symptoms, such as acne or excess hair growth
